AI you don't have to install β€” it's already there

Apple Intelligence is the AI layer that shipped inside iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia in late 2024 and has steadily expanded since. Unlike ChatGPT or Gemini, it's not an app you download β€” it runs on the Neural Engine of your device, with private cloud compute for heavier jobs. The bet is that the best AI assistant is the one already sitting in your pocket, with full access to your calendar, messages, and photos.

Who it's for: Anyone on an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, or an M-series iPad/Mac. If you live in Apple's ecosystem, this is your default free AI β€” the question is whether it's capable enough to skip paying for ChatGPT Plus.

Key features

Writing System-wide rewrite & summarize

Proofread, rewrite, make friendly/professional, or condense any text in any app β€” Mail, Notes, Messages, Pages. Select text and the Writing Tools sheet appears. Summarize works on long emails, articles, and notification stacks.

Siri Rebooted assistant

The 2026 Siri understands context across requests, knows your on-device data (with privacy intact), and can take multi-step actions inside apps via App Intents. Type-to-Siri is now the default interaction for many power users.

Genmoji Custom emoji from text

Describe any emoji β€” "a corgi wearing a tiny graduation cap" β€” and Apple generates a sticker-style image you can drop into messages. Surprisingly useful for reactions that the standard emoji set doesn't cover.

Image Playground On-device image generation

Generate cartoonish, illustration-style images from a prompt or a contact's photo. Deliberately stylized rather than photoreal β€” Apple's safety call. Fast, free, and runs entirely on-device.

Clean Up Photo object removal

The Photos "Clean Up" tool removes photobombers, wires, and stray objects with a tap. Not Magic Eraser-fast, but remarkably accurate for a free, on-device feature shipped to a billion phones.

The honest take

βœ“ What works

  • Genuinely free β€” no subscription, runs on device you already own
  • Best-in-class privacy β€” on-device processing + Private Cloud Compute with verifiable no-log policy
  • System-wide Writing Tools work in every app, not just Apple's
  • Siri's on-device context (calendar, messages, files) is something ChatGPT can't match
  • Genmoji and Image Playground are fun, fast, and free

βœ— What doesn't

  • Device-gated β€” requires iPhone 15 Pro / M-series Mac; older devices locked out
  • Image Playground is deliberately non-photoreal β€” can't compete with Midjourney/DALLΒ·E for serious art
  • Siri still lags ChatGPT/Claude on hard reasoning, coding, and long-form writing
  • Rollout has been slow and regional β€” some features US-first
  • ChatGPT integration is a fallback, not a true merge β€” context doesn't fully carry over

Verdict

Apple Intelligence isn't trying to beat ChatGPT β€” it's trying to make the AI you already own good enough that you don't need a separate app. For proofreading emails, summarizing notifications, removing a photobomber, or generating a quick reaction sticker, it succeeds and costs nothing. For serious writing, coding, or research, keep your ChatGPT Plus subscription. The ideal 2026 stack for Apple users is both.
