The free image generator that's actually useful

Bing Image Creator is Microsoft's answer to Midjourney and DALL-E โ€” and it's the only one of the big three that's genuinely free. You get 15 "boosts" (fast generations) per day, then unlimited slow generations. Powered by DALL-E 3 under the hood, so the prompt comprehension is excellent. Built into Bing chat, Microsoft Edge sidebar, and Microsoft Copilot, so there's no separate app to learn.

Who it's for: Bloggers, marketers, students, and anyone who needs decent AI images without paying $10-30/mo for Midjourney or DALL-E. Especially good for casual creators and Microsoft 365 users.

Key features

๐Ÿ†“ Genuinely free

No subscription, no credit card, no paywall. Sign in with a Microsoft account and start generating. Microsoft eats the cost because they're using you to train future models and lock you into the ecosystem.

๐ŸŽจ DALL-E 3 quality

Powered by OpenAI's DALL-E 3 model โ€” the same one behind ChatGPT Plus image generation. Prompt comprehension is excellent; it actually understands "a corgi wearing a top hat in a library, oil painting style."

โšก 15 boosts per day

Boosts are fast generations (~15 seconds). You get 15 per week, refreshed Mondays. After that, generations still work โ€” they just take 1-3 minutes. Most casual users never hit the limit.

๐Ÿ”— Microsoft ecosystem

One-click export to PowerPoint, Word, Designer, and OneDrive. The Edge browser sidebar can generate images without leaving your current tab. If you live in Microsoft 365, it's a no-brainer.

The honest take

โœ“ What works

  • Truly free โ€” no credit card, no subscription, no trial expiry
  • DALL-E 3 prompt comprehension is class-leading
  • Deep Microsoft 365 / Copilot integration
  • Content credentials (C2PA) for AI disclosure compliance
  • Multiple aspect ratios (1:1, 16:9, 9:16) out of the box

โœ— What doesn't

  • Image quality is below Midjourney v6 and Flux for photorealism
  • 15 boosts/week is restrictive for power users
  • No inpainting or outpainting (can't edit existing images)
  • Microsoft account required (no Google/Facebook SSO)
  • Content policy is stricter than Midjourney (no celebrities, brands)

Verdict

If you want free AI images that are "good enough" for blog posts, social media, and presentations, Bing Image Creator is the best option in 2026. It's not the prettiest output (Midjourney still wins), but it's free, it's fast, and it's already in your browser if you use Edge. For Microsoft 365 users, it's a default part of the stack.
