OpenAI's smartest model yet. Agent mode, 400K context, multimodal everything.

The default AI assistant for most of the internet

ChatGPT-5 is the fifth generation of OpenAI's flagship assistant and the consumer AI tool most people reach for first. It brought agent mode (the model can take multi-step actions on its own), 400K-token context (a long novel's worth of text), better coding, and the cleanest multimodal experience of any chatbot. It is not always the smartest model in any single category, but it is the most complete.

Who it's for: Everyone. Beginners get a friendly free tier; pros get the broadest feature set (text, code, images, voice, video, web, files). If you only pay for one AI tool in 2026, this is the default.

Key features

Agent mode Multi-step tasks

Tell ChatGPT-5 to "research X, draft a slide deck, and email it to my team" โ€” and watch it click through browsers, run code, and assemble the output. The first consumer AI that feels like a real assistant, not a chatbot.

400K context Long memory

Drop in entire PDFs, books, or repos. ChatGPT-5 remembers 400,000 tokens (~300K words) per conversation and references them accurately. Big jump from GPT-4o's 128K.

Multimodal All the inputs

Text, image, voice, video, file upload, screen share, canvas, code execution โ€” every input mode works in one place. The only major assistant with native video understanding.

DALL-E 3 Image generation

Built-in image generation that respects prompts and edits inside the chat. Less artistic than Midjourney but more controllable, and zero context-switch.

GPT Store Custom agents

Browse or build custom GPTs for niche tasks โ€” a "Contract Lawyer" GPT, a "SQL Tutor" GPT, a "Meal Planner" GPT. Thousands available; most are mediocre, the good ones are useful.

The honest take

โœ“ What works

  • Most complete assistant: text, code, image, voice, video, files, web, agents โ€” all in one tab
  • Agent mode actually works โ€” the most reliable multi-step tool consumer AI has shipped
  • Free tier is genuinely useful (GPT-5 mini with rate limits)
  • Best mobile apps in the category โ€” iOS and Android feel native
  • GPT Store has thousands of niche agents worth browsing
  • Voice mode sounds the most natural of any AI assistant

โœ— What doesn't

  • Writing quality still slightly behind Claude for long-form โ€” sycophantic tendencies remain
  • Agent mode errors compound on long tasks โ€” still needs supervision
  • $20/mo Plus for full GPT-5 access; $200/mo for Pro tier is steep
  • Image generation is competent but artistically bland vs Midjourney or Flux
  • Privacy: free-tier conversations train future models (opt-out exists but buried)

Verdict

ChatGPT-5 is the Swiss Army knife of AI assistants โ€” not the sharpest tool for any single job, but the one you reach for first because it has the most tools in one place. If you only subscribe to one AI in 2026, this is the safe default. Power users should add Claude for serious writing and a coding-specific tool (Cursor or Claude Code) for software work.
